Holocaust Education Network

A forum promoting best practice in Holocaust instruction

I am wondering if any of you know about a collection that deals with those who hid. I am particularly interested in those who passed as Christians. I have tried to get Hidden Children of the Holocaust but it is unavailable on Amazon (I haven't tried elsewhere). It may be in the library at the JCC here in Milwaukee.

Suggestions???

Hi Mary,

The USHMM exhibition Life in Shadows: Hidden Children and the Holocaust can still be accessed online.

The Museum Teacher Fellowsship Resources website also contains several lessons supporting this exhibition and the topic of hidden children.

There is a film called "As if it were yesterday" by the French filmmaker Esther Hoffenberg, about hidden children:

Sorry this may be a bit late for you, but I have a book, Hiding to Survive, Stories of Jewish Children rescued from the Holocaust. It is by Maxine B. Rosenberg. It is a collection of stories about the children who were hidden complete with photos of them as a child and now gown as adults. Each story is about one child and his/her journey. It might be helpful.
Mary,
Holocaust survivor Sabina Zimmering and her sister survived by posing as Polish Catholic girls. Her book is Hiding in the Open. We had her speak to our community at Viterbo in April 2006. Marv & I picked her up at her home in Minneapolis, MN. She is a retired physician & is delightful. Ellen Bisping knows her also.
Another book to consider for hidden children is A Scrap of Time by Ida Fink. Remember Karen Shawn taught us stories about hidden children when we were at the Ghetto Fighters' Kibbutz in Isreal in 2001. She did a whole lesson on the topic. I know at least a few of her stories came from A Scrap of Time by Ida Fink.
